Oregon Department of Administrative Services

State Government Intern

June - August 2019 • Salem, OR

What I liked

I was given the opportunity to shadow multiple different agencies in the State government. I really like being able to learn how the government works outside of making legislation. I really enjoyed meeting different people and learning how they ended up working for the government. I also really like learning all the different kinds of career paths that the government has to offer.

What I wish was different

The one thing I wish I could change would be my ability to choose at least one agency that I went to go visit. I was given a schedule of agencies to go visit over 6 weeks, but I wasn't allowed to cherry pick. But it also gave me a great opportunity to discover things that I wouldn't have learned or experienced had I chosen them myself.

Advice

I would absolutely recommend this internship, especially if you are interested in working for the state government, or don't have any clue what you want to do. One piece of advice that I would give is to not be afraid to ask questions and network with the people you meet. Networking is a great way to get help in the future, or even get certain jobs. Make good impressions on the people you meet, and they will most likely be willing to help you out.
