Technology Development Intern

June - August 2022 • Eden Prairie, MN

What I liked

Working with interns from other schools and being able to learn from them as well as the devs employed by the company. The chance to work on development of a real project. Networking is highly encouraged by Optum.

What I wish was different

More consistent interaction with our manager (he understandably had a very busy schedule), or having a senior developer assigned to our intern team would have been helpful when navigating development issues that are unique to Optum’s systems.

Advice

Excellent internship even if you don’t have a lot of prior development experience. You will learn a ton!

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2022 • Eden Prairie, MN

What I liked

The work-life balance was amazing because of the internship being fully remote. The management was also very empathetic and always willing to help you. I also learned a lot and had a great experience doing so.

What I wish was different

I honestly couldn't have asked for anything better. In 2023 they are going back to fully in-person, which is unfortunate so I wish that was different.

Advice

Don't be afraid to try new things. I was introduced to a very large field that I had very little knowledge or experience on, but I ended up learning a lot and the field is now one of my passions within computer science.

Data Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • Eden Prairie, MN

What I liked

It was a great opportunity to learn about data science and machine learning as that was not my background. There was a lot of opportunity for professional development as well. There were a variety of different networking events and seminars to help me grow in the company and as an individual. My internship followed final project showcase format where we took on an existing project and worked with full-time employees to complete it throughout the summer. The presentations throughout the program were great for me to get feedback on the work we were doing and meet senior leaders in the company.

What I wish was different

I personally wish it was more closely related to my major. Data science was not something I was looking to do, but it was a great experience nonetheless.

Advice

Big companies like Optum are a great place to reach out and network within your team and with other people in the organization. Showing leadership in your intern team and pursuing connections outside of your team is the best way to grow professionally and technically. My work was best when I asked for help from experienced employees.

Backend Software Engineer

June - August 2021 • Eden Prairie, MN

What I liked

I really enjoyed my experience! I made great friends with the people I was interning with and did some pretty cool work with them. I learned a ton from my mentors and managers and thought it was a great environment.

What I wish was different

The only thing I really wish had been different I wish the experience was in-person. I feel as though I could have created a stronger bond with my intern mates as well as managers and mentors. Perhaps I wish the intern events had been more engaging as well, but that had a lot to do with everything being online as well.

Advice

Ask questions early and often. If you pretend like you know something, it's going to be quite awkward to have to ask for explanations later. Make sure you get as much information as you need to know what is expected of you and your group. Your mentors and managers are very happy to help! That's what they're there for.

Business Analyst Intern

June - August 2020 • Eden Prairie, MN

What I liked

I loved working with my group members who all came from a diverse background. My managers were very understanding and relatable. We had meetings with people all over the world who were interns as well as UHG workers. Optum was very supportive and provided us with ample resources during our internship. Overall, I will never forget my amazing experience with them.

What I wish was different

I do wish that the internship was in-person instead of virtual so I could have met my peers in-person and work in the Optum office however, I am still happy with my experience.

Advice

One advice I would share about this experience is for interns to not be afraid of asking questions. We all start off with not knowing what we are doing in the internship so it is okay to ask for clarification. The managers are there to help you and guide you through the whole experience.

Technology development program

June - August 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

Great environment for engineering majors to grow and gain project experience.

What I wish was different

I think a better introduction to what the interns will be working on during their time would be appreciated. So that students can prepare well.

Advice

Great experience and highly recommend students to apply for the opportunity.

Information Technology Intern

June - August 2020 • Basking Ridge, NJ

What I liked

The company culture directly aligned with my beliefs and it was a great experience to get hands-on learning about the field and what a day in the life of an IT employee at Optum looked like.

What I wish was different

It was a great online internship so I have no complaints but do wish we had the opportunity to come into the office.

Advice

Be ready to learn and open to feedback from everyone; it's a great way to learn new technical and soft skills but also a way to have a sort of mentor guide you down a better path as well.

Software Developer Intern

June - August 2020 • Schaumburg, IL

What I liked

I honestly couldn't recommend this program enough. They put the interns into groups based on interests and strengths, then assign a project to each group. Once projects are assigned, they have a Shark Tank style competition that allows groups to present to employees at Optum and get super helpful feedback. I loved how welcoming and helpful everyone was!

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to see the office! Everything was remote as a result of COVID-19. However, Optum actually did a great job at adapting and making sure we still got a lot out of the experience.

Advice

Do not be afraid to reach out to people and ask questions! Seriously, haha. Everyone I talked to there was genuinely willing and excited to help.
