What I liked

I really enjoyed my summer here at OpenStax, a Rice-based, nonprofit textbook publisher. The organization has a great culture where people are all passionate about their work. As interns, besides tasks that were assigned by managers, we were also grouped into three teams and spent the entire summer working together to deliver a new product idea for the firm.

What I wish was different

I wish that there were more interactions between different intern teams.

Advice

Not in particular. It would definitely be one of the best internship experience you'd ever have, so just enjoy.

Software Development Intern

What I liked

It was a great experience to learn about web development. I focused on backend development but the other intern with the same position worked primarily on front end development. There was a lot of independent learning but our supervisors were there to help us out and direct us. We also worked part of the time on side projects with a group of interns developing a new feature for the company that really allows you to explore something different from your main tasks, and work collaboratively.

What I wish was different

When there was a lot going on in the company my supervisors were often busy and I wasn't able to get help and spent time fumbling around trying to do things that should have been much simpler tasks.

Advice

This internship is really what you make of it. If you put the effort in to trying to do your best work you can get a lot out of it and learn new skills and frameworks/ languages. But if you slack off you won't get much out of the internship, but it will be a really chill summer. Also pretty good chance of getting an opportunity to continue the internship throughout the school year part time if you want to.
