Water Resources Intern

June 2020 • Oklahoma City, OK

What I liked

The experience was amazing. I loved applying what I had learned in the classroom, as well as exposure to things we don't get in class.

What I wish was different

We were in lockdown, so almost everyone was working from home. This meant we had to actually call or have a "Teams" meeting instead of just walking to someone's desk for help.

Advice

Don't be scared of what you don't know about your profession, you're not suppose to know it yet.

Road/Bridge and Field Operations Intern

May - August 2019 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

I worked in two different offices. The first month of the summer I was in the field, and it was very hands on. The work was easy to pick up on, and I enjoyed the variety that came with each day. It was a lesson in logistics, being prepared, and being competent. The remaining on the summer I was in the Omaha office, which meant more consistent hours, and I got to be pretty good friends with my coworkers cause I saw them all the time. I got my hands on some new software as well.

What I wish was different

I wish I had sat down with my supervisors early on and outlined what I expected to get out of the internship. That way we all would have had the same expectations, and I think I would have learned more. I would have liked to have seen other departments in the company and the projects they were working on.

Advice

Going into an internship, make a list of goals and experiences you want to be a part of, and let your supervisor know. The guys at Olsson are more than willing to make your experience what you want it to be if you take the initiative.
