Old Sturbridge, Inc.

Historical Interpreter

May - August 2019 • Sturbridge, MA

What I liked

I loved teaching the public about history and wearing old fashion.

What I wish was different

I wish we weren't worked as hard in the fields and I wish the clothing was made of lighter material like linen.

Advice

I would say be prepared to learn, you'll learn alot about the 1830s. You should like to work with your hands

Historic Interpreter

May - August 2018 • Sturbridge, MA

What I liked

I liked the effort put into this program. It was obvious that Old Sturbridge Village cared about its interns, and wanted them to succeed. They provided us with housing, an intense training course at the beginning of the summer, weekly meetings to learn about the many aspects of museum work, and even two trips to other Massachusetts museums. I definitely felt appreciated there, and learned a lot through my work.

What I wish was different

I only wish I had the opportunity to work at more sites throughout the village. While I appreciated really getting to know my work stations throughout the summer, I was curious to learn more skills as well.

Advice

Go into the internship with an open mind, one that's ready to absorb a lot of information! Don't think that just because you aren't skilled in a certain aspect of the internship (ie hearth cooking) that you aren't qualified. They will teach anyone who's willing to learn.
