Ocean State Veterinary Specialists

Technician assistant

May 2019 • East Greenwich, RI

What I liked

We work hand in hand with techs on inpatient treatments. I was trained in assisting with emergency/ icu treatments such as setting up the ER stations for potential STAT cases entering the hospital. I also administer sub Q fluids, maintain hospital cleanliness, practice animal restraints and process animals that have been euthanized and prepare for them to be handed to our cremation services.

What I wish was different

Put in more hours, to level up faster

Advice

Be prepared to be put into high stress level situations and learn how to multitask under stressful conditions. A lot is going on at the same time, learning how to handling things one step at a time and be comfortable enough to speak up when your are unsure about something is important.

What I liked

I loved getting hands on experience in my field all whilst getting paid. Being able to help treat patients and watch them get better and go home is the best part of the job.

Advice

It is definitely a great place to work as long as you know what you are getting into. The shifts are long and can be stressful depending on how busy the clinic is. Just remember why you're here and how your presence makes an impact.
