Student Nurse

March 2019 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

As a student in the nursing program, this externship gives you the opportunity to work side by side with a Nurse fulltime during the summer. Once fall semester begins of senior year, I am still able to work with a nurse every five weeks for 12 hours until I graduate. This program is beneficial for nursing students, it allows us to expand on skills we've learned in class and clinical. We also learn the nursing role in the hospital for a selected unit we are interested in. This is important for new grads, it allows them to know what area of nursing they would like to apply for upon passing the NCLEX. It is also helpful to begin to learn the computer system EPIC which Norton uses prior to working as a new nurse.

What I wish was different

It was a good experience. I cannot think of anything I would change.

Advice

Research and apply for the area of nursing you are most interested in upon being hired to the extern program with Norton. Utilize Bellarmine's career center mock interviews prior to your interview with Norton Hospital, they will prepare you for interview day and give you tips to improve your interview.
