I had the opportunity to be creative and create programs and activities for the kids to. Because it's a shelter, the kids are not always consistent. Families come and go every other month so I am constantly having to tailor activities to my new group of kids.
What I wish was different
I wish there were more youth advocates to work there. Because the families live in shelter, they are always there and want me to always be there too. If there was regular business hours I wouldn't feel the heaviness of the kids and parents demanding me to be more available.
Advice
Patience is so important! The kids come from abusive backgrounds and may have experienced some form of trauma. This is important to keep in mind when dealing with behavioral problems.
