What I liked
I had heard a lot about the culture at Northwestern and when I was offered an interview I took it. The culture has exceeded my expectations. My team has a lot of fun together. We have gone out to dinners, events, and weekend stays at a cabin. We also do many office events in order to spend time with each other. There are frequent meetings and seminars across the office and company, which are very encouraging and motivating. The people I work with make me excited to come into work and help me learn the industry!
What I wish was different
The finance industry is like learning a new language, so there is definitely a lot of information coming in at once. This can be overwhelming at times. However, your co-workers work hard to support you, as well as challenge you.
Advice
Make sure you are using the interview to your advantage. You are interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you. Many college students will take a position just because it is offered. I would encourage you to make sure you are in the right position. There are so many roles that you could hold within the company, so make sure you know your options so that you can find where you fit in best!

College Financial Representative
May 2021 • Onalaska, WI
What I liked
The ability to be my own boss was one of the biggest highlights of the job. You are truly your own business owner but you still have guidance and a support system around you. The impact that you can have on clients is another advantage of the job. You get to help clients achieve their financial goals and set the foundation for generational wealth. Your clients look up to you and it is a rewarding feeling when you help others succeed.
What I wish was different
I wish we would have been given more education on different financial topics. They give us all the information we need to be successful, but having some training in areas like home buying or property and casualty insurance would allow us to better serve our clients.
Advice
Be prepared for a lean first couple of months. It takes a little bit of time before you make significant money. If you don't have enough money saved up to cover living expenses for a few months, you will have added stress on your plate.

Advice
Spend time early on setting up your list/"mode of attack." Once you start, your resources go away quicker than you think.
