Financial Representative Intern

June 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I like the fact that everyone treats you as a full time employee, while also recognizing that you are very new to the field and help you with the paperwork intensive environment.

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship period could be longer, but this is of no fault of Northwestern due to the constraints based around school schedules.

Advice

I would say be ready to work and not make a lot of money right away, but the work you put in on the front end pays dividends in the long run.

Financial Representative Intern

May - September 2017 • Albany, NY

What I liked

Great company with a fun environment. The annual meeting in Milwaukee is amazing. Getting hands on financial advising experience is great and you learn a lot about people and situations that a textbook just cannot do to prepare you for your career. You're literally your owe business owner, so you get out of it what you put in and that is really fun and you have the potential to make a ton of money.

What I wish was different

The worst part of the job is finding clients. So you have to call family and friends to come in or give you names of people who may be interested to come in. The clients won't come in to you because you don't have experience, so you have to get them. Its a pain to call, but other than that aspect its great overall.

Advice

If you are an outgoing personality or really driven you can succeed and do very well in this internship. Definitely not for people who are very introverted.

Financial Representative

January - June 2016 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I liked the fact that I was gaining real world experience as it was treated the same way as a full-time financial representative. They trained you on the process and how to be effective in the business.

What I wish was different

I wish there hadn't been a heavy emphasis on making sales and selling activity. Your level of selling related activity determined if continue the internship or not.

Advice

This is a true insight into the infant stages of a financial advisor's career. You must start with the necessary tools, insurance, before you can get into more exciting things like investments. If you want to know what it looks and feels like to be a financial advisor, this is a great opportunity.
