What I liked

Being able to be directly involved with politics through mobilizing youth voters was very rewarding.

What I wish was different

The leadership was haphazard at times, which was stressful.

Advice

Get comfortable with reaching out to strangers and your social network to have conversations about politics which at times could be difficult or rewarding.

What I liked

I liked how I made a real difference in the community by creating a culture shift--making voting cool. Not to mention the fact that we were successful in our efforts as Wisconsin went blue.

What I wish was different

I wish the organization and training would have been more streamline and concise.

Advice

Google job openings. Even though it seems like you will never get past an interface, that is usually untrue. Take a chance and apply online somewhere--you just might get a video interview.

What I liked

The work is very impactful! Getting students to register to vote, and then show up to the polls is a huge issue that can be solved. It was very rewarding feeling knowing you helped them get more involved.

What I wish was different

I wish the university was more lenient on the restrictions it has on outside organizations (that are trying to become clubs) because we could have done more cool stuff that would’ve helped our goals!

Advice

Make sure you can fit it into your schedule. It’s not going to help anyone if you are not committed/doing it for the money. The issue of young people voting is important and you should want to do the work! It’s actually fun if you do it right

What I liked

Working with NextGen this summer taught me a lot about how grassroots organizing and community activism can create genuine change within our state and even within our country as a whole. It was enlightening to see the tactics, skills, and strategies that individuals and groups use to effect social and political change.

Advice

This type of work requires you to be very flexible in the hours and environments that you work in. Some days are slow with not much to do, and other days you work nonstop all day. This is often exciting and empowering work, but if you are not able or willing to be flexible with your schedule, then you may want to reconsider accepting a position in field organizing or grassroots community activism.

What I liked

I liked knowing that the work I was doing every day was directly impacting peoples lives and political involvement.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more emphasis on young people, though it was tough because schools in the area weren't in session so the position required a lot more "guerilla organizing".

Advice

Think about the difference you could be making more than your discomfort.
