NEXT Electric LLC

Safety Intern

May - August 2019 • Waukesha, WI

What I liked

I liked the structure and the priority of safety within the business. It gave me first-hand experience into the safety world as NEXT's safety department had to be able to observe electrical contracting in various differing environments. We focused in new construction, renovation, fire alarm, wastewater, and even in the medical field. NEXT is a business with a safety culture that is bar-none exceptional and has created a work environment in which the stereotypes of the 'safety cop' do not exist, but has rather created a company that emphasizes the well being of their employees.

What I wish was different

During the internship, it was expected that there was going to be new projects and that NEXT Electric itself would have been busy, but that was not the case. It seems as though at the start of the internship, work was on the rise, but it had plateaued and formed a sort of lull within the safety department. Overall as an intern, I was able to stay busy with a lot of the remedial forms of work and even getting to work with different departments.

Advice

Like all internships, there will be a learning curve. Many of the aspects of this internship seemed daunting at first, but the purpose of being an intern is to ask questions and NEXT is more than happy to provide you the answers. My main advice is to be timely with projects, ask for guidance if needed, and refresh on the Microsoft Office skills.
