I’ve learned a lot of new research skills such as behavioral coding and how to search for new psychology literature. Additionally, I’m being trained in working with participants. Overall, this lab has given me a lot of new research experience I wanted. The staff and work environment are also great.
What I wish was different
Nothing really. Only thing about this lab is that it’s unpaid. If anything, I wish I had a part time job this summer while also doing this externship.
Advice
Interning at a research lab will sometimes be mundane. It will include tasks like data entry. It’s about learning to work with both the interesting tasks and monotonous tasks.

Admissions Ambassador
January 2018 • New York City, NY
What I liked
The flexible hours, the pay rate, the friendly staff that you work with.
What I wish was different
The policies can occasionally be inflexible and each shift is done in a two-hour block, which can create some inconsistency in your schedule.
Advice
Definitely bring your A-game to work. Being the front face of the Admissions Office can be challenging and time-consuming and you will work long hours, especially on days when there are big prospective student events. However, it's a really rewarding experience where you meet people from all over the world while representing the university. If you approach each day with an open mind and an expectation of difficult problems to solve, you'll succeed.

Social Science Research Assistant

What I liked
I loved the flexibility and how I could sit and do my work at any time of the day. If I didn’t feel like working on Monday, I didn’t and would instead work late nights on some other day. So that flexibility was very valuable to someone who likes having her own space to work.
What I wish was different
I wish I was more frequently in touch with my professor. Being virtually in contact with your professor is very different than being physically in touch with them.
Advice
Be focused. During research, something interesting will always pop up and you will always want to diverge but you have to constantly remind yourself what your thesis is.
