Intern
July - August 2018 • Jackson Heights, NY
What I liked
Very nice work environment. My supervisor was amazing. She trusted me with his email passwords.
What I wish was different
I wish I had more face time with the assemblyman
Advice
Always be on time to work. The other people I worked with were always late and the assemblyman would get angry with them and make them come in earlier.

Constituent + Events Liaison
May - August 2018 • Albany, NY
What I liked
As a newbie in an office environment, the daily work of a Constituent + Events Liaison was an enriching experience. There were established procedures to different cases and methods to contact team members. From consultation documents to constituent data bases, the work was clear and distinct in the fast-paced office environment. There was always something to do, whether it be researching for a policy or handing daily cases.
The environment consisted of individuals who had the similar, if not the same, vision for their future as me. I envisioned myself in the future as someone who is involved the U.S government and/or the law industry. There were plenty of mentors and peers to advise me on my journey to law school as well as a future worker in the government industry.
What I wish was different
There were numerous days when there was little to no work to be done in the office due to the number of interns that were hired by the NY State Assembly. Since there were branches such as events, constitution, legislation, the work handed to the office was allocated in accordance to its problem/topic. Although the amount of opportunity provided is great, there should be a lower limit to the amount of admitted interns.
By working for the government, there should be public benefits such as compensating for public transportation. The commute from my home to the workplace was not compensated. I wish the commute expense would be wavered or provided by the NY State Assembly.
Advice
In an office setting, the one main trait that you MUST have or learn is adaptability. The office environment is very fast-paced without much break in between. There will be many times that you have to adapt to change. It can be from something not going according to plan which can easily be fixed by a back-up plan or risk management. There will be people who you may or may not get along with. Regardless of personal feelings or opinions, you will need to adapt to their personality so that a professional demeanor and effective communication can be maintained. Hence, adapt to your surroundings. Don't expect your environment to adapt to you at all.
