New York Life

Accounting and Control Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I was exposed to the corporate environment and I was able to use my skills I learned in class in the real world.

What I wish was different

I worked internally with accounting but I wish I worked externally with accounting. I did the accounting for the human resources department.

Advice

I would suggest that you take very good notes on everything your boss says throughout the internship because this will make your internship easier along the way.

Insurance Agent Intern

June - August 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

There were bi-weekly team training meetings (how to prospect for clients, how to network, how to run client meetings, etc.). They were super helpful for learning how the industry works, and how to do the job well. The people I worked with were awesome too. Very willing to help me learn, and get to know me, even as I was only a temp intern. Very supportive organization, from top management to my peers.

What I wish was different

Summer isn't an eventful time. So I felt like outside those training meetings, I was doing a lot of busy work, which was unfortunate.

Advice

Ask questions. Be willing to learn. Volunteer for anything that needs to be done, even if it it does just seem like irrelevant busywork. If you work hard and well with any task you are given, people will respect that you are a hard worker and will trust you with more tasks to do. Once you build that rapport, the stuff you get to do gets a lot more interesting.
