Working with such an inclusive, thoughtful, creative, and talented team of OL’s to make orientation a success even through an entirely virtual platform.
What I wish was different
I wish we could have experienced orientation in person, or that all students attended each session so that we could reach even more of the incoming first year class.
Advice
Use this opportunity to learn a lot about yourself and come into the opportunity with an open mind prepared to get new perspectives. You will definitely come out of OL summer different than when you entered it.

What I liked
I loved the process. You have to take a 3 unit class to prepare for the summer and I grew so much. I got better at my interview skills, public speaking skills, and social skills. Working with students coming to Chico state is amazing because you can give them advise and tips and help them have a smooth start to their college career.
What I wish was different
I wish we had a larger variety of food over summer because sandwiches were an everyday thing except on Wednesdays but I cannot complain because what job feeds you? The heat was also a problem just because we had to give tours and walk all around the school but it wasn’t too bad.
Advice
One piece of advise I have it to challenge yourself! Challenge yourself by getting out of your comfort zone and speak your mind and give your input because the growing process only happens if you challenge yourself and put yourself out there!

Orientation Group Leader
May - August 2019 • Rochester Hills, MI
What I liked
I liked the team aspect of this position. I met some of my best friends working this job.
What I wish was different
I wish that I had been a bit more open to the challenges of the position. By that I mean I wish I had been more willing to step outside of my comfort zone and just let loose in order to have a good time and provide a good experience for the first year students.
Advice
I would recommend letting yourself have a good time. There is a lot to know and a lot to do but this is also one of the most enjoyable positions available and you are basically getting paid to have fun, so act like it!

Peer Advisor
May - July 2018 • Chico, CA
What I liked
Prior to working as a Peer Advisor for Summer Orientation my goal was to become a high school history teacher. After joining the summer orientation team I fell in love with higher education and I have found my true calling. Being a Peer Advisor allowed me to represent CSU, Chico as a frontline ambassador and help incoming students start their Chico experience. As my time as a Peer Advisor ended, I was not ready to say goodbye. I had the honor to join an amazingly diverse team who loved our university as much as I did. Because of this experience, I want to continue a career in higher education.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have applied for this job a year sooner. It was such an amazing experience. I grew so much as an individual and a professional.
Advice
The diversity of this team allowed us to work with each other's strengths and improve our weaknesses. Each person brought something unique to the table and it helped our team function greatly. Embrace the experience and soak in each day. Every day is a new experience and a chance to learn and grow.

What I wish was different
I wish I had more time to get to know my orientees, but that is hard to do.
Advice
I would advise older students to get to know first years because they are just like us, and they really look up to older students.
