What I liked

The internship allowed me a lot of freedom in customizing my job in a bunch of different disciplines and designing my experience to what skills I was interested in building. Also, the internship was mainly hands-on, with about only one day a week being spent in the office and the rest spent out in the community. I felt like there was a great distribution between mentorship and personal freedom so I learned a lot from observation as well as trial and error.

What I wish was different

The program was through the Mayors Summerworks program in Louisville. Part of the program included me working with a career coach once a week. I did not find this part of the internship helpful. It felt very elementary and almost a hassle.

Advice

Really think about what skills you want to develop from the internship and voice that to the supervisor. While they often do need specific help, they can often shift responsibilities or create new opportunities so you can get what you want out of the experience.
