What I liked

My favorite part of the internship was a strong engineering culture at New Relic, which allowed me to learn so much about the profession. I had a chance to work on a part of an incredibly complex system with the guidance from experienced and passionate engineers. I learned how to write better code, review other's work, write unit tests, debug, monitor and so much more. Another great aspect of my experience at New Relic was mentorship. From my manager and assigned mentor to all my teammates, everyone was always willing to help and answer all of my questions.

What I wish was different

I honestly wouldn't change anything. The internship was an amazing experience. It's worth to note I was an intern during the first summer in the pandemic, hence the internship was remote. The University Recruiting team made sure to give us the best experience despite the challenges of the remote work environment.

Advice

Think what you'd like to get from the experience and what you'd like to learn and share your goals with your manager and mentor! If there's anything you'd like to do or learn that's not included in your project I'm sure they'll help you connect with people and resources you need to get that extra experience or exposure.

What I liked

Company culture is great. Everyone is very helpful and the company is moving towards pretty high diversity. The intern group especially was very diverse and I got to learn about many different perspectives through the other interns. I also managed to learn a lot because rather than having a separate intern project for interns to work on, I got to directly work on what the team I was on was working on.

What I wish was different

I just wish that it was in person. I got to go into the office once, but it was quite empty and it would have been nice to go in when a bunch of other people were also going in.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. No one at this company will ever say that a question asked is a "dumb question." Everyone is happy to help so be sure to ask questions when you feel stuck.

What I liked

What I liked about interning at New Relic was the way that the company expressed their honest excitement for having interns. I always felt welcomed, and I always felt like everyone at the company truly wanted to see me grow as a person. I was continuously treated as an equal and was always reminded that I was a worker at New Relic and not just an intern.

What I wish was different

I don't really think that I would change anything about the experience. Though if I had to settle on something, I do wish that I we could've had a bit of an in-person experience, but was completely out of New Relic's hands. However with that being said, the internship program did a great job at accommodating the online experience which in turn made me almost forget about missing out on the 'traditional' in-person experience.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share about this experience is take advantage of connecting with people, eve those outside of your team. New Relic truly offers an environment that promoted growth and exploration. Never let these opportunities slip your mind because you can learn so much from shadowing or setting up a one on one meeting.

What I liked

Company culture is real, I had super positive interactions with people across the organization. The environment is very supportive and conducive to learning. The experience provides a good balance between holistically learning how an established software company operates and having ample opportunity to write code. With enough effort you can be assured that your work can make an impact on the bottom line and seeing your features hit production is quite satisfying. Perfect role for getting exposure to a lot of industry tools/processes (name what you want to learn and they'll accommodate!).

What I wish was different

On the whole, not much. I would have been fine with a slightly shorter orientation period, but based on the opinions of my fellow interns I think I'm in the minority and it is a length of time/amount of information that is pretty well suited to everyone.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, ping your manager, the engineers on your team, people on other teams, etc. Now is the time in your career to learn and as an intern you are not expected to be operating at the level of a senior software engineer right out of the gate. It sounds obvious but a lot of people are ashamed to ask questions because they assume they are expected to know certain things already. We all have different backgrounds and strengths/weaknesses, don't worry about it.

What I liked

I was able to work with highly knowledgeable and friendly people on interesting projects and was provided substantial support. I was given autonomy to choose projects and shape them in ways that I thought were best after consulting with team members. I was able to talk and learn from people all over the company.

What I wish was different

I feel like I missed out on part of the experience and opportunities to connect with people as the internship was remote due to Covid-19 precautions.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, you don't know what you don't know.

What I liked

I liked that I was provided the autonomy needed on my projects to truly learn and challenge myself. New Relic's culture emphasizes personal development through collaboration and I truly reaped those benefits throughout this experience.

What I wish was different

Obviously, as is the case with most things COVID, I wish that it would have been in-person rather than remote. I know that I would have been in the San Francisco office which would have definitely been a once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, New Relic ensured that I was comfortable at home and that I had the office tools necessary to succeed.

Advice

I feel that when it comes to internships like these, the experience is really defined by your own actions and attitudes. If you want to make the most of it, you definitely can.

What I liked

I really liked everyone on my team, as they were all very welcoming and helped me with any questions or confusions I had on my work. I also liked how open everyone was in the internship and it was really nice to meet new people passionate about the same things as me. It was also awesome to see code that I wrote go into production and make an impact.

What I wish was different

It would have been amazing to have an in-person internship, but I completely understand why that was not possible this summer!

Advice

Make an active effort to get to know everyone on your team and the other interns, it's really nice to make new friends and connections in a work setting. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions if you are stuck on the work you are doing!

What I liked

The culture that is in place at New Relic is so welcoming, inclusive, and well-established. The various resource groups that are present really help contribute to the sense of community that is available to us as interns (and employees company wide). From Rainbow Relics, to Relics of Color, to Relics Who Have Served, these resource groups bring people together, creates bonds, and encourages important conversations to be had. I've also really loved getting to know my fellow interns. Despite my internship being virtual, the program that has been set up for us really helped lay the groundwork for making friendships.

What I wish was different

Advice

There are countless amazing people that work at New Relic that are excited about the opportunity of talking to interns. The advice I would give is to reach out to these employees, make those connections, build your network, and allow their wisdom to be heard. It provides so many great opportunities to learn more about the company, the different roles that are held, how to make an impact, and to possibly even find a mentor of sorts.

What I liked

The recruiters were amazing, welcoming, and full of energy. My mentor on my team was super helpful and ready to answer any questions I had. Many people in the company were open to connect and chat about their career paths, what they loved about the company, and what they're working on.

What I wish was different

I, of course, wish that the internship could have been in person if not for the pandemic. However, I believe that they had a very good online internship program and were well versed in maintaining good communication despite being scattered across the nation.

Advice

Reach out to people! They are happy to answer. In my experience, this place definitely has a growth mindset and it's ok if you make mistakes or don't get it right away. They definitely prefer that you reach out and ask than you sit around not knowing what to do.

Wish it had not been remote, I wish there had been a little more structure to projects in the beginning. Overall amazing experience.

A lot of the knowledge is learned on the job. It can be intimidating to work in tech but you learn everything on the job.

As a non technical intern, I wish some of the more technical talks were optional but they ended up being very helpful anyway.

What I liked

Working on a team of driven individuals on an established product was a very cool experience. I also loved being able to work on my own side project and see it through from start to finish. There is a ton of autonomy and trust, even as an intern.

What I wish was different

The program was very small, so there was just a handful of other interns. I had some friends living in Portland, and was still able to meet people, but this was definitely a different feel than large internship programs. While the independence was a great growing experience, I would have loved to become closer with more interns.

Advice

Talk to the people around you! While I was close with my team, I was often too intimidated to venture too far out beyond them. But the reality was that most people were interested in my work as an intern, if I made the effort to introduce myself.
