Orientation Leader

March - August 2020 • Las Cruces, NM

What I liked

I loved interacting with incoming freshman and transfer students. I had the chance to speak on student panels talking about my own experiences on campus and offering resources for new students.

What I wish was different

This was out of anyone's control but I wish I had the chance to interact with students in person, of course, due to the pandemic it could be a little harder to connect with everyone online.

Advice

I would encourage anyone that has a passion for leadership and loves their campus to apply for this position as it is a chance to learn what goes behind the scenes of the orientation experience.

Student Assistant - Tutor

January 2020 • Las Cruces, NM

What I liked

Even in times were we have to life through a pandemic, I was very glad that the technology allows us to help other students and explain the class material to them. I enjoy helping the students to get a better understanding of the class material that they do not understand or struggle with. Additionally, I am always happy when the tutoring session resulting in an increase in letter grade.

What I wish was different

In my opinion, some classes I can tutor better in-person instead of online, but because of the pandemic it was not possible. Therefore, I think the whole tutor team and myself did / do an amazing job to help other students who struggle in class or have other questions.

Advice

Throughout this experience, I definitely improved my communication skills and also challenged myself. I also grow with this experience and learned new leadership skills that will help me in my future pathway.

The team I worked with were very helpful and understanding. The accrual of Annual and Sick Leave is amazing!

The required retirement deduction takes a big chunk out of pay and, including state/federal income taxes, reduced my pay by almost 25%. This is mainly due to COVID-19, but there training was sporadic and a bit confusing at times but overall, the team training me was great and did their best!

Advice
