Assistant Director / Assistant Stage Manager for the Junior Intern Company
June - August 2019 • New London, NH
What I liked
I got a very intense learning experience through a wide range of responsibilities for 5 separate fully staged plays over the course of 3 months. I was the assistant to 5 different directors, a stage manager and a box office manager, as well as lending a hand in the scenic and costume departments and handling occasional administrative tasks. From this wide range of responsibilities, I got incredible hands-on experience in theater education, and I grew immeasurably from it. Additionally, I got close with many of the dozens of theater workers who passed through the Barn over the course of the summer and learned a lot about sustaining a theater career through these relationships.
What I wish was different
I wish I had shorter hours (I was working 50-60 hours per week) and more guidance for my stage managing responsibilities. I also wish the pay was better.
Advice
Pursue jobs like this to learn a truly holistic view of what it takes to mount a production! But be ready to work.
