Throughout my time at New England Baptist Hospital, I enhanced my patient care skills, communication skills, nursing professionalism skills, and implemented my resourcefulness in a professional environment. I learned new tasks that I have never done before such as checking blood sugars and learning how to bladder scan a patient. New England Baptist Hospital is the premier regional provider for orthopedic surgery and treatment of musculoskeletal disease so as a nursing assistant I learnedthe importance of positioning patients and different techniques of mobility.
What I wish was different
The only thing I wish would have been different is to be given the opportunity to experience a different environment than just a post-operative floor such as having the opportunity to explore OR and surgery or get to explore the PACU environment.
Advice
My advice to other future interns is to not give up on applying to positions available. I applied to many different positions and felt like I was not going to get a position because I did not hear back for a while but if you are patient and continue to apply to positions, an opportunity will come along. My other advice is to get to know members of your work environment. I met other nurses, doctors, and health care members who worked in the hospital setting. From walking up to nurses who I did not meet yet in the hospital and introducing myself, I was able to create friendships and learn from their nursing experience.
