Neighbor

Software Engineering

January 2021 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

10/10 highly recommend to a friend. Interns at Neighbor are treated just like every other engineer. You work from the same backlog of tasks, and are expected to drive impact. This creates numerous learning opportunities, and allows you to do work that matters. You are involved in decision making processes throughout the development cycle. Neighbor has an infectiously positive and transparent culture powered by hard-working and self-driven engineers.

What I wish was different

Nothing. From the people I worked with to the projects I completed, it was an excellent internship.

Advice

Neighbor practices self-driven, agile development. You are both an engineer and a product manager. You have input into the direction our product goes. Because of this, you will only get out of the internship that which you put into it. If you invest yourself to understand both the user issues and the potential solutions, you will have significant impact at the company. If you wait for others to tell you what to do, you will not make much of a difference.

What I liked

You’re treated just like a regular part of the team and take on important projects that are actually used. Not to mention the team is amazing! Everyone is great to work with and they have a lot of fun.

What I wish was different

It can be a bit stressful at times since it’s a startup but nothing that can’t be managed.

Software Engineer Intern

What I liked

The team was awesome. They helped me grow as a developer. It was a fast-paced environment and I learned a lot.

What I wish was different

There isn't much. I was able to make an impact right from the start. Perhaps some people wouldn't enjoy the small startup environment.

Advice

It's important to make an impact wherever you are. Take ownership of your work and try to tackle problems that you may not know how to do at first.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

The team was super fun and close-knit. I had a lot of freedom choosing the projects I wanted to work on. Every day I worked directly on projects that showed up on the live site. In other words, I loved interning with a startup.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Advice

Own your work, especially as an intern. Even if you are given a project you aren't particularly excited about, make it yours. If your employer can trust you to do great work, they will be more likely to give you freedom in choosing future projects. When you do have the opportunity to choose what you want to work on, don't be afraid to shoot for the stars. Choose something that interests you and that will push you - do something you've never done before.
