NEI Electric Power Engineering

Electrical Engineering Intern

June 2020 • Lakewood, CO

What I liked

NEI has been a perfect company to work for this past year. It has been a goal of mine to get my foot in the door of the renewable energy industry, and the work I've had the chance to do relating to solar arrays and battery storage has been a dream come true! The hands on experience I attained in my internship was exactly what I was looking for. On day one I was already doing meaningful work for real world projects! NEI's work environment and flexible schedule allowed me to flourish in my time as an intern and has given me the tools to continue working remote in Orlando during the year.

What I wish was different

Obviously the pandemic puts a damper on everything now days, but I was still able to live out in Colorado during the summer and occasionally go into the office, while most other internships were fully remote at that time. Given the circumstances, I don't think there was anything I would change!

Advice

I believe there are benefits and drawbacks depending on the size of the company you are looking into joining. Make sure to test the waters on both a smaller company like NEI and on larger corporate companies as well. They both yield valuable experience, so don't count either out without giving them a try.
