News Student Worker

January 2019 • Lincoln, NE

What I liked

Everything. I've received and am still receiving hands-on experience in a great newsroom. I've been able to shadow talented working professionals, ask copious amounts of questions and for the most part, gain real world experience in my future industry. It's a great experience with great people.

What I wish was different

Advice

Once you get the hang of your day-to-day duties, you're very free to try many things. Ask questions and learn from the professionals. I think you'l learn a lot experimenting with work just by yourself. However, I think sometimes it's even more valuable to sit back and observe the working professionals.

Emerging Media Intern

June - August 2018 • Lincoln, NE

What I liked

The team I joined was organized, caring and hardworking. I was given the freedom to go on field assignments if I wanted to and I never once regretted it. I was given the opportunity to contribute to meetings and report on my activities and accomplishments every week. I was treated as a professional equal. I was trusted with research and editing and always felt as though my role was vital to the department.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had gotten to experience more of the ebb and flow of a newsroom and the emerging media department. I worked during the summer which is the fieldwork season, so lots of people are out doing projects far from the office. I missed being around lots of people because I like to discuss my ideas with multiple people. It helps me refine my process.

Advice

Talk to everyone. People are very friendly and want to help you, but you have to ask. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to others in the company by some of my team members, but I also went out of my way to meet other employees. Also, go out to lunch with your collegues. I ended up having some great conversations over sandwiches.
