National Archives and Records Administration - DC

Education and Public Programs Intern

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to apply what I am learning in classes to real life application and being able to explore a carrer path that I have been interested in for awhile.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have been able to stay longer and work more on some of my projects that were not quite completed when I left.

Advice

Slow down and enjoy the small things. We get wrapped up in big projects and deadlines that we overlook smaller, but still rewarding and interesting things.

What I liked

I liked the work and the culture at the National Archives. I really appreciated the fact that I was able to work on a project of importance to me that will undoubtedly have an impact on the organization. I also liked the cheeriness of the people who worked at the Archives. All of it made for a genuinely exciting and interesting experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been paid, but that is not necessarily within the control of the Archives itself.

Advice

I would say it's good to be excited about American history if you want to pursue this experience. Otherwise, it may be difficult to enjoy.

Education and Public Programming Intern

What I liked

I loved that I was working in the heart of the United States government and learning about how public service works. I also enjoyed working with the public and teaching them about our nation's history and how the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights fit into that.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had worked more with the public and less behind the scenes. I wanted to give tours, but I was focusing more on planning. Still, I learned a lot about everything that goes into event planning and curriculum.

Advice

Talk to your advisors and ask as many questions as you can. They have a great deal of knowledge and are always willing to share. You will learn a lot if you do!
