Computer Vision Intern
May 2021 • Houston, TX
What I liked
I honestly have enjoyed every minute of my time interning with NASA. These past few months definitely didn't involve fetching coffee, but rather I was able to do real research work (and coding) in support of a much broader NASA project. The culture is amazing and the I have learned so much!
What I wish was different
Being completely candid, I have absolutely no complaints. The salary was about as much as my previous job waiting tables, so I was able to leave that job but a little more compensation certainly wouldn't have hurt.
Advice
This opportunity, working at the very forefront of Computer Science in the field of Computer Vision, has changed my life (and my life perspective). There are so many different levels to life and so many smart people working to augment the human experience. If I can do it, you can too, but be sure to take advantage of your opportunity!

Aeroacoustics Intern
June - August 2019 • Hampton, VA
What I liked
Everyone working there was passionate about their work. The environment was both very professional and very fun with tours of the facility and other events targeted towards the entire facility.
What I wish was different
Honestly, nothing.
Advice
If you are passionate about your work and it is STEM related, definitely apply for NASA internships. You never know if you are the one chosen to do something amazing. It was a rewarding experience and I will remember it for the rest of my life. There are also very important people working on NASA campuses around the country and getting the chance to meet some of them can be a career making experience.

Engineering Intern
June - August 2019 • Hampton, VA
What I liked
I enjoyed working at the oldest NASA center and developing a new concept to put a greenhouse on Mars. It was fun to work with a team of students from around the country. In addition, I enjoyed the tours all around the center. Since the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing happened this year, I was able to represent NASA in Washington DC. It was an amazing opportunity to meet and network with many people in the aerospace industry.
What I wish was different
I wish we had more guidance on our project. Our office was in a room with no windows, and we would spend a full 8 hours or more working on the project at our desks. We didn't really take a lunch break or go outside. I wish my project was more hands on or allowed me to interact more with the rest of the center.
Advice
I would say that students should be selective when accepting an internship. If you read the description of the internship, and it doesn't really interest you, don't spend the time applying and potentially working on something you won't enjoy.

What I liked
I really liked the hands on research aspect of the internship. I liked going out in the field to take measurements and learning about how to analyze the data we recorded.
What I wish was different
I wish it had been a little more organized. The project developed a lot towards the end and became more organized then.
Advice
I would share that it's important to be able to work with others and to verbalize your ideas and opinions.

Advice
Take advantage of the opportunities available beyond the project you work on for the internship. There are so many seminars, presentations, and intern events that can make an internship at NASA even more exciting and awesome. Most people working there are also more than happy to tell you about what they're working on, and it can be really cool to go on tours of different facilities.

What I liked
I was able to experience NASA at it’s maximum capacity. I helped test space equipment, guided a research project, and also helped mentor high achieving high school students. I liked everything that I did.

Advice
Get involved early and have a high initiative while working. Your bosses will give you tasks that they think you can do. If you work hard on every project and keep asking for harder projects, you can move up in the company and possibly find a job that way. That’s what I did and I was asked to return to help with the integrated space environment testing of the MEDLI2 project for the Mars 2020 campaign.

What I liked
The fact you get to go to work everyday seeing the big NASA logo knowing you get to work to advance humanity's knowledge and capabilities.
What I wish was different
I wish there was more help finding a place to live, it can be difficult finding affordable short-term leases.
Advice
Don't be afraid to apply to internships that may be competitive or you think you have no chance of getting, I never thought I would ever work at NASA but you never know until you try.
