MSU WKAR Public Media - College of Communication Arts and Sciences

WKAR Communications Website Writer and Editor

September 2021 - August 2022 • East Lansing, MI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the larger sense of meaning that went into everything I helped write and create. WKAR does such amazing work within the mid-Michigan community and it was rewarding to be a part of that, even in small ways. I also appreciated the responsibility that I was given from the very beginning. I liked being able to learn new tasks and contribute to large projects despite just being an intern.

What I wish was different

In the aftermath of the pandemic, there were much fewer opportunities for getting involved with activities in-person. I always felt very excited to learn and meet people as a part of the few in-person events I attended, so I am very grateful for those moments and wish I could have had more. Things are starting to pick up again and hopefully future interns can experience much more in-person again!

Advice

Don't be afraid to try new things! You'll never know how good you are at something unless you give it a try. Even if you end up not liking something, it helps you narrow down what you hope to pursue in the future.

All Things Considered Intern

September 2017 • East Lansing, MI

What I liked

I like the many opportunities at WKAR. Even though I am the All Things Considered Intern, I voice the weather for Weekend Edition, I have operated the sound board for Current Sports, I have accompanied journalists on stories, and I upload stories to the WKAR website.

What I wish was different

I don't wish anything was different at WKAR, I just wish that I had more time to fully embrace all of the opportunities that WKAR offers.

Advice

My advice would be to take as many opportunities as you can. You never know what information will be useful in the future and you never know who your colleagues are connected to.
