Transportation, Bridge Structures Intern

What I liked

What I liked the most was the tight-knit atmosphere. I felt like I was a part of a family! All of the employees were very welcoming and helpful. I also enjoyed being taught by the Transportation Department everything I know now about bridge design and participating in the firm's luncheons and community activities.

What I wish was different

I wish I was given the opportunity to see the sites of the bridges that I was helping design.

Advice

Please take every opportunity you receive to build connections with the employees, whether it's in the office or outside the work environment by attending the luncheons and community activities. Ultimately, they are there to help you reach the next level of your career and they want you to succeed.

What I liked

The staff was great and despite it being more of a structural/architecture position, my supervisor worked to allow me to do mechanical-type work when possible.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to be able to do more CAD work. The computer I was given was quite slow as well and HR did not allow a faster computer to be used.

Advice

You may not feel confident in the work you do immediately and that's ok. Ask questions, make sure you at least know what you're trying to do, and learn to trust yourself. It is your supervisor's responsibility to make sure that the company isn't losing money through a wrong number or dimension.
