McLennan County

Engineering Intern

June - September 2022 • Waco, TX

What I liked

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the office in which I worked. The Engineering and Map Department is a very close-knit community that welcomed me with open arms and gave me enough guidance to where I could work on projects on my own, but I still felt safe to ask questions when necessary. I liked the amount of direction I was given and freedom to complete projects on my own and at my own discretion.

What I wish was different

I honestly cannot think of anything I didn’t like or would change about my internship, however, I thought that in addition to manipulating data to create map layouts, I would collect data and import it into ArcMap for use. However, I learned that our map data comes from the McLennan County Appraisal District.

Advice

When I started, I didn’t know that I work with other offices in the County. I spent a lot of time curating address reports, sending maps, and answering to the Elections Office. On the engineering side, I didn’t know I would get to go out on field visits and learn about our ongoing engineering projects. From this, I learned a lot about how to conduct professionalism with other offices and consulting firms.
