Mass Eye and Ear

Lab Intern

June - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

The people I worked with were incredible, they allowed me to gain hands on experience and run my own projects all while assisting with real research. I was able to learn about grants, protocol, and other research related activities that are very important along side the actual science.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been there longer! I also with I had a clearer schedule!

Advice

Communication is key! Don't be afraid to ask questions!!!

Volunteer

June 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

The ability to spend time with patients and direct them to wear they can receive care. It was special to feel like an important part of the hospital system by making beds, guiding patients, and cleaning nurses charts and waiting rooms. The practitioners are very kind and do their best to find a way for you to help and become more involved in the hospital. Patients are lovely and very appreciative. This is a fulfilling volunteer position and will make you feel good about yourself and others.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to find a volunteering opportunity a bit closer to home, as the commute to the mass eye and ear infirmary did take a lot of time. I live in a small town about an hour outside of Boston, so it is time consuming as well as expensive to commute into the city a few times a week. As for the volunteer opportunity at mass eye and ear itself, I would not change anything.

Advice

Be open to learning and you will succeed in this position! Kindness and taking direction, as well as respecting patient and practitioner privacy is most important.
