What I liked

I was welcomed into an environment of hard working and dedicated peers who motivated me to become a boss a** lady because our whole North America marketing team is made up of females and we have 3 males. My team is also very involved with volunteering so we always make sure we're giving back our time. We do a lot of team bonding activities but we also have a lot of formal team meetings to help better our direction and give our superiors an idea of our annual goals. They also celebrated my birthday and threw me a graduation party, and are always making sure to ask me if I feel overwhelmed or if I need anything. I was able to be speak honestly about my feelings and concerns and they were always very open and honest with me, which made it clear to me what they expected and if I would end up with a job through them. I also worked in retail for the past four years so the change of scenery was similar to a culture shock, but very much needed. This was the real world experience for me.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more aware and informed about the business world. How to dress, what the vocabulary is like, what kind of jobs and job offers to avoid or be informed about (like talent agencies). And also to be able to have us come back and talk to the younger college students about our experiences so they get an idea of how the workforce is adapting and changing each year. What is in demand last year may have shifted and no longer exists in the world this year and vice versa.

Advice

I would say be true to who you are and let your experiences or journey (related to the job) be your gateway to make you stand out. I was very honest about how passionate I was about film and photography and have been shooting my side projects of music videos for 5 years. My mom told me I shouldn't have said that since it sounded childish, but a week later they called me and told me I got the job. They told me that I stood out and they were truly looking for someone who was passionate about the position and did it outside on their own time as well, proving they clearly have a love for it and looked to grow in it. Had I listened to my mom and just sound like I'm trying to sell myself or robotic, they would've assumed I'm just another photographer/videographer. And last but not least APPLY, APPLY, APPLY. I applied to 6-12 jobs a day on linkedin for three months in all different places of the US. I got a few rejection letters and even more "unresponsive" emails (meaning they didn't let me know I didn't qualify or didn't get an interview.) Just like you are a one in a million you, there are a million jobs and not all of them deserve you. You both have to scout for each other and if this wasn't the job, it's okay, there's plenty of other fish in the sea!

Global Tax Intern

June - November 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

Every day was busy and there was always something to do. They were always willing to answer questions and help out. This was my first accounting related experience, and I certainly learned a lot about the difference between what we learned in class and what I actually did.

What I wish was different

The work variety? I know that as interns, there's only so much we can do with our limited knowledge as well as the time that we are there for. I don't know how to word it, but I felt like I was just doing busy work most of the time. I didn't feel like I actually contributed to anything. This wasn't true for ALL of the work I did there. There was a few projects I was on that I felt like I was contributing to something. Or perhaps there could have been better communication about the end product of our work.

Advice

Specific to the department I was in: I would say that the most important traits is that you have to be able to work independently ( and teams when needed) and knowing how to group your questions together to ask them. Most of the time, the office was really quiet and everyone was focused on their tasks. I don't know if this was due to the time period I interned for (summer). Like perhaps they are really busy for summer and are more relaxed during other time periods? One of the other interns I worked with was really curious about everything (the processes, how the department gathered information, etc). Not that they didn't encourage curiousity, but they were being a little obnoxious about the questions they were asking. They were asking a question every 5 mins, but when we would have meetings specifically for debriefing or asking questions, they wouldn't ask any.
