LDS Family Services

Psychotherapist Intern

January - August 2019 • Cedar City, UT

What I liked

I loved the quiet, peaceful atmosphere, having only a few co-workers, and the mostly fully-furnished office space. I enjoyed not dealing with billing or insurance and the documentation was fairly simple. I appreciated the fact that we had prayers to begin meetings.

What I wish was different

The work was pretty monotonous and dry. I felt a strong desire for a change after only a few months. I didn't care for consulting with ecclesiastical leaders as that was just time out of my day that I could otherwise be in appointments. I just felt like I was bothering them rather than helping. I struggled to fill my bookshelves with church-appropriate things because I didn't have a lot of knick-knacks or books and I didn't want to spend money just to fill the space, especially if I was only going to be there temporarily. I went to the DI for space-fillers, and managed, but it wasn't ideal. I didn't care for the fact that I had to wear a tie and dress shoes (although since I left, ties are no longer required). I was gravely disappointment by how clinical the atmosphere was. I had hoped it would be more about listening to the Spirit, praying, and doing things God's way rather than using the philosophies of man (clinical, "evidence"-based, etc.). I was disappointed that the culture wasn't more holistic. While I loved the free sugary treats they provided sometimes, they didn't seem to understand the very important connection between food, mood, and overall wellbeing, which even the Word of Wisdom implies.

Advice

This was a good experience overall compared to a lot of the other places you could work as a therapist. I'd say it's a decent experience for an intern, but I am not sure I'd want to stay there permanently due to the monotony of the work and the bureaucratic structure of the department. If you are highly sensitive to monotony and bureaucracy like me, try private practice (especially one that doesn't bill insurance), or better yet, choose an unregulated profession like coaching so you have flexibility to branch into other areas. *This internship was not unpaid, but I agreed not to disclose the amount I was offered.

Administrative Support Intern

November 2018 - May 2019 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I didn't like it at all, I LOVED, NEEDED AND MISS it TERRIBLY! The whole experience has set my whole perspective in a direction that was very surprising yet so overwhelmingly grateful for the experience of 2 lifetimes. I say that cause I had one lifetime of living in the past. Now, I am grateful at 60 years old able to look forward to my life that will be for the rest of my real lifetime. The wonderful people at LDSF are ever so kind, especially the therapists! I consider them to be my life long eternal friends and family.

What I wish was different

Of course, to have been able to discover these lessons of learning new and better ways to live, love and give of myself to a loved one and others! I would have taken earlier opportunities to get to know and love me so I can love those around me, the world around me and especially to love the process of learning every good thing I could and share it!!!!

Advice

Love the life you have, and if you don't love it...change it , so when you wake up in the morning and go to sleep at night, you WILL be GRATEFUL for it! THEIR are people in this world that are just like you, trying and succeeding at what they love too! SILI
