What I liked most about my internship with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department was that I was involved in a wide array of activities that allowed me to truly see what it was like to work within their Homicide/Sex Crimes Bureau. I had the opportunity to go with a detective (or detectives) to listen/watch suspect and victim interviews, as well as participate in executing a search warrant. I was also given the opportunity to tour several other criminal justice agencies within the city such as the jail house, court house, and the forensic laboratory. I was also able to work with those other agencies by participating in a ride along. Those agencies consisted of the CSI/CSA Unit and one of the seven police area commands within the city.
What I wish was different
I wish I didn't have to leave! I loved my internship and saying goodbye to those I had come close with over the summer was very difficult for me.
Advice
One piece of advice I would share about this experience, or really any internship, is to make the most of it and take advantage of every opportunity that is given to you. Prior to my internship, I had heard of several people just wanting to get their internships over with because it was required by the university. However, once I began my internship out in Las Vegas, I didn't want it to end. An internship is an opportunity for you to really discover what it is like to be in the field, and the connections you make with those you work with can really have an impact on you getting a job later in life.
