Camp Counselor

What I liked

I was able to help young people identify their gifts and talents and use those gifts to glorify God. I made connections with other staff members while pouring into the lives of high schoolers daily. The food, parties, games, and activities were all well planned and overall amazing. I used to come as a camper but being able to give back and serve kids all around the nation (even the world some weeks) has truly been a blessing. I couldn’t see myself ceasing from helping in any way possible!

What I wish was different

The hot summer days were hard to deal with a times.

Advice

Be ready to be stretched in ways you’ve never been before. There will be some difficult times, but it’s important to realize that everything is for the kids, for the kingdom, and for your own personal growth.

Camp Counselor

What I liked

I loved the ministry of KAA and the caring, intentional love given by the staff. Also, I loved the relationships I built with other staff members!

What I wish was different

The rules for counselors were a little bit harsh and strict, like to the exact minute that we had to get back to camp on weekends. I wish this had been more relaxed and understanding.

Advice

Be ready to be uncomfortable! Working at KAA really taught me to depend on the Lord outside of my comfort zone physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

Christian Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Branson, MO

What I liked

I enjoyed working with different counselors from different places, especially serving the Lord through our ministry to the kids. I was able to be certified for many things, this enabled me to teach different techniques on swimming, playing different sports, and high adventure tasks to kids.

What I wish was different

I wish that our off periods were longer. The job and tasks required us to be on our feet from 6 in the morning until 12 am, so we hardly gained much sleep throughout the week.

Advice

The experience is difficult, especially when you have to adjust to a schedule that is constantly on the move and hardly considering time for yourself. It is a huge sacrifice on your side, and it can become draining mentally, emotionally, and physically; however, the outcome and results are beautiful and seeing other people change their lives for the better through accepting Christ is a beautiful experience. It's worth it, but it requires a lot from you! Accept the job with a mentality that the summer won't be about you, but about the people youll be serving and your connection with God.

Camp Counselor

May - July 2019 • Lampe, MO

What I liked

I liked being able to challenge myself. I also liked the patience that I gained and maturity I gained.

What I wish was different

I wish I had not done the work for as long as I did. I wish I had more time off and Sunday's off.

Advice

It is very rewarding, low paying, and stressful, but it equips well for inner city youth ministry. Very much worth the pain.

Camp Counselor

What I liked

Working at Kids Across America pushed me out of my comfort zone and to the limits of what I thought I was capable of. Having twelve kids from rough areas placed into my care and under my supervision for a week at a time was no easy task. However, I grew more in my relationship with Christ more than in any other time of my life, made life long friends, grew to trust myself and my coworkers, and saw kids learning about Christ through their interests on a weekly basis. It was an experience I would never trade for any highly touted internship or high paying hourly job. It was an experience that will continue to shape me and my understanding of God's people forever.

What I wish was different

There is very little I would change about my summer at KAA. I fought for the Lord on a daily basis with the people around me and took away some great lessons that I can take with me forever.

Advice

Come into this job with an open mind. Especially coming from a context like Wheaton College, seek to understand before you seek to be understood.
