Kids 4 Coding

Lead Instructor

June - July 2024 • Lawrenceville, GA

What I liked

Working with kids is always a fulfilling experience, it teaches patience and understanding of how to work with different needs. The work environment is also very friendly and enjoyable. My coworkers were fun to be around as well as the presence of the two women who run the camp. I also enjoyed how we were given creative freedom for how to run our class and the way in which we presented the material.

What I wish was different

The location was semi-difficult to commute to from Atlanta, but that can't be helped.

Advice

Come prepared with a way to present the material to the kids in such a way they can digest the material. It can be very detrimental to assume the kids of this age group can comprehend more than they really can.

Coding Instructor

May 2020 - April 2021 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

My experience being an instructor at Kids 4 Coding was incredible. It was quite rewarding to teach the students about useful concepts like python, machine learning, and game development and watch them grow throughout the class. Additionally, it was always enjoyable to see them apply their creativity to the lesson and approach the course challenges with a unique mindset. All in all, the experience was incredible and I would recommend it to anyone interested in teaching the next generation about fascinating technology concepts!

What I wish was different

My experience was fully virtual which presented some challenges in terms of engagement, and I would have loved to have taught in person instead.

Advice

I would recommend this experience to individuals who have some experience working with children as it will be somewhat of a challenge if you never have. In the class environment, it is incredibly important to be patient when teaching and also to be engaging with the material you provide.

What I liked

I really liked being a Coding Instructor for Kids 4 Coding. Teaching such important concepts to interested children was far more rewarding than I ever could have imagined prior to starting the job. The opportunity gave me a great chance to work on my leadership skills and improve the way that I convey technical ideas and concepts to others. I genuinely looked forward to showing up to work everyday and would absolutely recommend this job to anyone who has interest in EdTech.

What I wish was different

I was fortunate enough to be able to teach in person, but also experienced teaching online over Zoom. There is a significant difference between the two different formats and I think that being taught in person is more beneficial to not only the students, but the teacher as well.

Advice

I would highly recommend having had experience working with children prior to applying for this job. Teaching kids how to code can require lots of patience.

Coding Instructor

May 2021 - March 2022 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I loved working as a coding instructor for Kids 4 Coding. I had a lot of flexibility in terms of creating my lesson plans, but also a lot of guidance from the staff when I had questions about what to teach or how to handle different learning styles. I learned a lot about how to teach kids of varying skill levels while also improving my own coding foundations. The programs I taught with for Python and Scratch were really fun to use and interactive for the kids. The staff was extremely responsive and communicative, making it easy to ask questions or get clarification when needed.

What I wish was different

I taught virtually which had a lot of pros, but it would have been nice to also experience teaching in person, which I would want to do if I returned now that Covid restrictions are minimal.

Advice

I recommend only taking this job / applying for it if you love working with kids and are very patient because teaching coding can be challenging and requires you to be very understanding of student's varying capabilities.

I also found the schedule well organized, with a good amount of independence given to the instructors to choose how to teach the subjects.

What I wish was different

Advice

If you have never worked with children before, it can feel intimidating when trying to figure out how to hold onto their interest in the subject while teaching. Kids love engagement, so I would always recommend making the lessons as interactive and hands-on as possible.
