Kendal on Hudson is a not for profit 501 (c) (3) organization based on Quaker values and led by a volunteer Board of Directors. Kendal on Hudson is an affiliate of The Kendal Corporation, a system of communities and services for older people based in Kennett Square, PA. We support diversity, inclusiveness, and independence and support the Values and Practices of Kendal by remaining focused on healthy aging.
The concept of Kendal on Hudson emerged when two separate organizations β both with a vision of developing a continuing care retirement community in Westchester County, NY β discovered their common ground and worked together to accomplish that goal. In the mid-nineties, The Study Group for Retirement Alternatives, a committee of the Purchase Quarter of The New York Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), asked The Kendal Corporation to work with them to explore developing a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) in northern Westchester County or areas north. The Phelps Memorial Hospital Center board and staff leadership had been exploring the possibility of developing senior housing to be located on their river-front property in Sleepy Hollow, NY, for several years. When the two organizations were brought together in 1994, they began to work toward the creation of their common goal.
In 1997, Kendal on Hudson was incorporated as a not for profit organization to develop and operate a CCRC. The new community would enter into a long-term ground lease with Phelps and develop a full service CCRC with 222 independent living units. After five years of planning, design work, and local and state approvals, Kendal on Hudson broke ground in May of 2003 and opened the doors to the first residents the week of May 9, 2005.
