What I liked

It was a really great opportunity to learn and grow as a leader and as a Christian! I gained so much experience helping people through real and difficult issues, and I learned that I could push myself a lot further than I had previously realized.

What I wish was different

There wasn't enough physical rest. It was hard to be fully present emotionally or in games and things when I was so exhausted. Also, sometimes the leadership of camps was confusing, and we weren't sure how much free reign we had or how much we were supposed to be listening to someone and following directions.

Advice

It's a great opportunity! The rewards far outweigh the negative aspects.

What I liked

The small team size and one on one work with the professor who was doing the research.

What I wish was different

Would have been nice to have more time in the position. Building construction made it far more difficult to do all that we had hoped.

Advice

Research with a professor that you can get along with. Meet your teammates early and don't be shy about hanging out on the off periods as well. Getting to know who you're working with can help lab work go much faster or smoother.

What I liked

I enjoyed doing research with my professor Brandon Bate, and my friend Caleb Lyon. The topic we were focusing on was very interesting and I was very grateful for the experience in discussion, programming and presenting.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more people on campus, but that's not something that can be easily fixed.

Advice

To not underestimate the importance of asking questions. Ask if you don't understand because it's really easy to fall behind.

What I liked

I love working with people! I get to help people find things. Plus I get to meet new people and ask them about their visits to the college! I also love the staff and workers that I work with! I have gained a lot of experience!

What I wish was different

I wish I could have gotten more hours this past summer, the first 2 summers I worked I got around 40 hours a week.

Advice

Be outgoing! People love it when they are asked about their visits or their summers!

I wish I had more time at each camp, we usually stayed at each camp for about a week.

What I liked

I loved this job because it involved working with so many different people. I got to work with teenagers...which I love... and got to work with other wesleyan college students. I loved being able to spend a whole summer focused on ministry and just being a leader to students.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have had a little bit more rest. It was a long time without much rest. I think this has definitely effected me in a negative way. I got pretty burned out and coming back to school a week after it finished didn't give me much time to catch up on a whole summer of go go go.

Advice

I would say to dive fully into this experience. It is such an incredible and very unique experience that you don't get to do a whole lot. I also would say to make sure to find that time to rest when you can so that you can be as effective as possible within the experience.

Advice

Anyone pursuing a career in the medical field should consider doing research. There are so many opportunities in the field through research that it is important to at least have one experience so you're more aware of all the opportunities out there. I'm attending pharmacy school next fall and I'm glad I had this experience because I learned that I might be interested in it during graduate school and without it I may not have know it was out there.

What I liked

I enjoyed the independent nature of this research work. It expanded my skills in the lab, and I learned many valuable interpersonal and presentational skills. I also enjoyed the collaboration with professors across different departments.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a stricter schedule, more defined deadlines, and clearer guidelines, however, this is very much the dynamic of research because it is so unpredictable.

Advice

Even if you do not plan to pursue research long-term, do it at least once. You may not love the experience, but you may also find a new passion. I personally, really enjoyed my time and I am glad I did so. I would recommend this opportunity to any student looking to get some great lab experience separate from the tradional in-semester curriculum.
