What I liked

Working with a small business is a great learning experience. It gives the opportunity to see the big picture of a business in a much easier way, with it being on a smaller scale. I've learned so much about the business world from my boss, and there is a lot of exposure to different scenarios in a small business. It's completely different than going to work everyday doing the same exact thing. With a small business you learn a variety of tasks, through different critical thinking, and understanding the processes involved with the specific business. Accounting itself is such a learning experience too. Organizing data, critical general ledger thinking, and observing the financial situations and decisions within a business.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have asked more questions and tried to maximize the experience itself. I still work with the company, just less hours during the semester. So, there is less time for me to sit one on one with my boss.

Advice

This job taught me so many things about the business world, and forced me to critically think in ways I never have. I'm pursuing a degree in biology and chemistry, but have been staying at this accounting job in the meantime. Even though the job I am at now is not in my field or interest, I learned so much I would not learn from a research or biology career or even class. My advice would be to broaden your horizons, and if something feels right in the moment, there is nothing wrong with giving it a shot, because you never know the outcome. I was hesitant about a job not in my field of interest, but I tried it anyways and ended up loving it and learning so much.
