Grow Brooklyn

Tax Preparer Intern

January - April 2022 • New York City, NY

What I liked

In my work with Grow Brooklyn, I liked being able to work hand in hand with my employees and other tax preparers in helping with taxes. I made sure taxpayers had the documents they needed to file their taxes. If something is missing I email my supervisor for additional documents. After my supervisor gets back to me, he usually. This process makes everything go smoothly. When I finish preparing the return, I send the file to the site's database so the paperwork can be looked over and reviewed. When the tax reviewer sees that everything is good, they mark it as completed. All these services are done at no charge to the taxpayers. I even noticed a recurring pattern usually those who get their taxes done at the site speak limited English or cannot pay for the services. All of these families were considered low income and needed assistance which made my job even more important.

What I wish was different

What I wish would have been different was that the program would have been in person. This is not something that Grow Brooklyn is at fault for, it was just at the time with Covid-19 still being present a lot of the things were done online. All of my work was done online. I did not get to interact with any taxpayers while I worked there. A lot of my work included emailing multiple individuals back and forth.
