I had numerous opportunities to pursue my passion in medicine via interning for ophthalmologist Dr. Wu, scribing and conducting clinical research alongside Dr. Wu and fellow co-interns.
A brief summary of what I have worked on during this summer internship:
- Conducting OCT, Optos, ERG and VEP, KTOP/ Visual Field, and eye ultrasound tests on patients and assisting with FA/ICG procedures.
- Medical Scribe
- Co-authored "Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Chinese Translation" book
- Publishing for the Journal of Asian Health
- Conducted OPTOS screening at the El Camino Hospital of Los Gatos' Men's Health Fair 2019
What I wish was different
Advice
In any shadowing/ scribing internship, be sure to always have an open mind and learn from constructive criticism! Every day will be a new challenge and you will not always routinely see the same patients or diagnoses, so you will have to apply critical thinking to all cases. Lastly, always be willing to learn about everything and anything! My physician mentor, Dr. Wu, was always excited to teach me more about ophthalmology and all sorts of patient cases she had encountered in the past, and I am very grateful to have had this chance to gain exposure to the field of ophthalmology and medicine in general.
