Technical Support Engineer Intern

What I liked

The company was very employee-focused and encouraged self-improvement through personal trainings, certification vouchers, etc. They treated interns as full-time staff but provided them with the necessary support to succeed.

What I wish was different

The structure of the internship was a bit disorganized -- I trained on one product and then was transferred to a new one at the end of my training. I also switched managers multiple times which made it hard to establish a more personal relationship with my management.

Advice

Never stop learning. New cybersecurity threats are emerging everyday so you need to stay up to date on the latest vulnerabilities and be creative in how to address them.

The work I was doing was important and integral to the company. The work was interesting, the company had good benefits, and I love the people that I was working with.

What I wish was different

I wish that there may have been a little more warning of when the internship would end, and I wish there would have been more experiences for interns at the company.

Advice

Go in knowing that there are a lot of skills that will be developed on the job, and that you will be learning and dealing with new issues every day.

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to learn and grow. I was working on a new product for Symantec and it was a great opportunity to learn grow and develop skills, like making public facing documentation.

What I wish was different

I wish that Symantec hadn't terminated their Internship Program, because really, the experience was great, it was just cut a little short.

Advice

I wish I had gotten internships starting earlier. Reach out to everyone in your network as early as you can and start getting internships as soon as you can. Anything helps.

Backend Software Engineer

What I liked

The job was extremely in depth and hands on. It put us right into the real world on the first day and treated us as real employees in every sense. We had our own meetings, backlogs, projects, etc. It was a great experience

What I wish was different

I do wish the company had a bit more resources to dedicate to us to help us transition in at the start. They don't usually do much with interns, so they pretty much dropped us at our desks with a couple starting documents and tried to answer our questions as they came up.

Advice

Continue to persevere as much as possible before asking questions, you learn a lot more through the trial and error. Instantly caving and asking doesn't help you learn as much.

What I liked

There was a lot of flexibility with the position. I was able to sit on two different teams, but I also was able to meet and work with various other teams within marketing. I felt genuine support from each person I met in my organization and learned a lot.

What I wish was different

I wasn't able to take on as many projects as I would have liked. Due to some changes within the company, my internship ended earlier than I would have liked but my managers were accommodating.

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can and don't be afraid to speak up if you're interested in doing trying something new.

I loved the people at Symantec. They were all very helpful, both employees and fellow interns. I was able to learn a lot and no one turned me down when I had questions.

What I wish was different

Some of the major events could have been planned better, in order to work better with people’s schedules.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, because that is one of the best ways to learn and gain more experience.

What I liked

I never imagined myself to be at a cyber security company, but the UR Team has helped me realize how I can use my talents and interests to uphold Symantec's mission to protect the world's data in my own way by enhancing the intern experience. I love my team because they endlessly support me and allow me to combine what I'm passionate about with what I'm good at to create unique multi modal projects that promote fun, diverse, and inclusive activities and environments for all interns. I am grateful for all of the opportunities, growth, and relationships I have made with employees and interns alike over the 12 weeks, and I can only hope that current and future interns here will have the same experience I did!

What I wish was different

I wish I had other interns on my team. It got a bit lonely being the only intern. Luckily, there was one other intern from a different team on my floor that I was able to hang out with. More people around my age / position would've been nice.

Advice

Everyone you meet is a connection. Even if you get coffee with one person once, you will learn a lot more than if you've never had that 30 minute meeting. Ask as many questions as you can. People love talking about themselves and sharing their experiences, so you can learn a lot from them and about yourself!

Software Engineer Intern

What I liked

Besides being the biggest name in cybersecurity, Symantec is a place where I can learn from experts who have years of experience under their belts. Along with being able to work with brilliant team members, I also love the experience of working on a project that’s going to get serious real-world use. The company didn’t put together some fake projects to keep the interns busy for the summer – I’m a valued team member writing real code for a real service.

What I wish was different

It’s easy to be both totally prepared and completely unprepared for a job like this. The programming assignments I’ve faced in school prepared me pretty well for the individual tasks I do here, but what I couldn’t have done in school was fathom working within a system this big – every day I’m discovering brand new areas of the codebase to work on, getting emails to my team from people I didn’t know existed, and learning brand new terminology. School can easily prepare you to do the work, but schoolwork happens in a vacuum; it can’t prepare you to wrap your head around the massive environment in which you’ll be doing your work here.

Advice

Meet new people and learn a lot from them! We’re not here for “a summer job,” we’re here for one of the best educational experiences of our lives. We get to spend the summer surrounded by some pretty brilliant people, it’d be a shame if we didn’t take the opportunity to pick their brains on everything from technical tips to general life advice.

What I liked

I enjoyed everything this internship had to offer. This was my first exposure to working in a corporate company, and I learned a lot in terms of how things were supposed to get done. I also enjoyed the company of my coworkers, creating both long-term personal and professional relationships. I also learned that company culture plays a big role on your experience; it will allow you to enjoy going into work everyday.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been more vocal on trying a new position on a different team. As a web development intern, I wanted to know what it would be like to be on another team, such as data science or strategy planning business operations. However, with an extended internship, I can still deepen my skills as a web development intern and then look into different teams in the near future.

Advice

It is so important to create connections within the company. It was encouraged to take the initiative to have one-on-one's with managers, co-workers, executives, and more. You will learn so much about what other employees do, and you may even find something that suits your goals better. Networking does not have to be complex; it can simply be striking a conversation in the break room.
