FWD.us

Communications Fellow

June - September 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I really appreciate this fellowship because as a daughter of immigrants and a first generation professional who now holds a B.S. in Criminal Justice, I was working on issues that were both dear to my heart and that continue to shape who I am today. As a fellow at FWD.us I was allowed to make mistakes. Rather be punished and ridiculed in the office, I was encouraged to take these mistakes and learn from them. Because now was the time to mess up. I was given projects that I did not necessarily have experience doing before but with the right guidance I was able to complete them at a satisfactory level. This work environment has allowed we to grow and made me much more confident to pursue other job opportunities if the time came . However, I was blessed to be offered a full-time position with FWD.us and I could not be happier!

What I wish was different

I wish I had more projects or tasks dealing with our criminal justice vertical, but I am grateful for working with immigration teams and gaining a deep understanding of the injustice that many face when going through the immigration process.

Advice

Before I applied to this fellowship, I hesitated because I thought I did not have the experience to be able to perform the necessary tasks that the position required me to complete. However, I had to tell myself that despite the “lack of experience” in the real working world, going through college and graduating with honors was enough experience. Be confident in yourself and you will be well in life! Good luck to you all :)
