Funston Capital

Private Equity Intern

October 2021 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Overall solid experience in sourcing deals and conducting industry research. If you are interested in private equity I would say this opportunity is definitely something to consider. Work is completely remote and pretty flexible over the week. The managing partner is nice and will share with you some interesting podcasts/articles from which you can benefit a lot.

Private Equity Intern

January - April 2022 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The exposure was good as you get to analyze a wide range of tech-related industries and delve into specific companies that are sourced. Alex is incredibly knowledgeable about tech (being an ex-Google SWE himself) and he has been super helpful throughout the internship by supporting us. Weekly one-to-one catch ups are definitely good chances to ask questions and the work schedule is also very flexible. There was also a fun team-bonding event at Rock & Rileys at the end of the semester.

What I wish was different

It would be great if interns are also given a bit of modeling tasks--however it's understandable given that most underclassmen are not familiar with LBO stuff.

Advice

Ask lots of questions during the individual meetings and seek to understand the companies' business models & TAM as you are expected to talk about this in interviews. Also, an interest in software/SaaS would be a great plus.

What I liked

Alex is a really smart guy and did a great job with us interns. From teaching us the ins and outs of LBO deals and learning how to properly analyze a company, he consistently kept us interested. Weekly work was not too much but enough to learn and have questions for individual meetings. It was a great experience and I highly recommend!

Advice

Make sure to stay on your work before each team or individual meeting in order to ask questions and learn as much as you can.

Private Equity Analyst

June 2022 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The Private Equity Analyst Internship program at Funston Capital was a great experience! As an intern with Funston Capital, I was able to gain significant knowledge and develop several skills, both qualitative and quantitative that I am sure will benefit me greatly for the career that I envision pursuing within the private markets industry. As we all know in today's industry education is important, but the hands-on experience becomes even more important when seeking to launch your career - Funston Capital was great at providing me with the hands-on experience that I needed!

What I wish was different

Teamwork - I wish there was more teamwork involved. I feel teamwork is very essential when it comes to a working environment. I believe the experience of working with other interns/employees can expose you to great experiences - it allows you to learn about other cultures, share ideas, learn about their perspectives, and you can become a better person!

Advice

As a Private Equity intern at Funston Capital, I strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with all of the concepts that will be provided to you at the beginning of the program - making sure that you are familiar with the concepts would not only indirectly inform you of what the expectations are from you, but will help you significantly to make the most of it from your journey with Funston Capital!

Private Equity Intern

May - August 2022 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed working under Alex. It was really exciting to learn about the space from him, and he went over a lot of what is truly applicable in the industry. I worked as a part-time intern, as I manage my own company on the side, so I was not as hands on as the other interns, however, going to our weekly meetings, and one on one meetings was great for me.

What I wish was different

We went over a lot of different models that are applicable when performing due diligence and evaluating businesses, but didn't do a bunch of it, so I wish we could have gotten a tad more experience with that. I wish we did some more collaborative projects too, if possible.

Advice

Attend the meetings, and do the research as much as you can. Shadowing Alex is a great way to learn about the space and I recommend anyone do this internship either full time or as a part-time shadow time opportunity.

Alex was a really great mentor and I learned a lot from him. The internship was very flexible and I was able to do work whenever I wanted to. Weekly assignments were a great way for me to learn more about search funds and the specific sectors I was researching.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more ice breaker events to get to know the other interns.

What I liked

In my experience, interns are given the opportunity to do meaningful work that directly contributes to the success of Funston Capital. Private Equity Intern

January 2022 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

First of all I really enjoyed working for Alex, the managing partner. He was very kind, flexible, and understanding of our position as college students doing an internship during a spring semester. He understood that college students would have a learning curve and he did a great job of giving us tasks that we could complete and not be overwhelmed. Secondly I loved the way the internship was structured. We had roughly the same schedule every single week throughout the semester so it was easy to plan for the tasks each week and schedule my other commitments around that. In terms of the work itself, I would recommend this internship to anyone regardless of experience because Alex will give you tasks and let you contribute to the fund as much as you can. If you have more experience and hard skills, he will give you more advanced tasks to grow your skills even more.

What I wish was different

One thing that I would change is to have the team meetings on Mondays so that I could work on the assignments over the weekend

Advice

I would advise anyone who is doing this internship to make sure to ask a lot of questions. Alex is very knowledgeable and also accessible to all of the interns. He will be a great resource to teach you about finance and private equity so the more questions you ask the more you will learn.

Marketing Analyst

January 2022 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Working at Funston has been a great experience. There is a lot of collaboration between your co-workers but also solo assignments to complete each week. These tasks differ each week, which gave me great experience in different areas of marketing. I completed industry research, organic social media content development, competitive analysis, and even helped design a promo video and newsletter. I am currently still interning at Funston and look to continue interning for the summer as a private equity analyst.

What I wish was different

The internship is around 10 hours a week, which isn't too much of a time commitment. I believe we could have gotten a little more of a workload, however, it makes sense for college students who have classwork as well. Overall I believed the workload to be very achievable within the timeframes.

Advice

Alex is an amazing leader and he really wants you to succeed. He cares about the work you put in for him and offers to help if we ever have trouble with something. He is very appreciative and flexible which makes the work much more enjoyable.
