Freshkills Park

About Freshkills Park

Freshkills Park is in the early stages of developing a unique public art program as part of the massive ecological restoration and reclamation of New York City’s former landfill. The Art/Culture Program (http://freshkillspark.org/os-art) promotes understanding of and access to the landfill-to-park transformation while it opens to the public over time; develops innovative strategies in environmental restoration; and incites socio-environmental change through education and demonstration. The 2,200-acre engineered landscape and unmatched scale offer opportunities for artistic research, experimentation, and demonstration/presentation unlike any other space in New York City. With both immediate programs and long term installations and interventions, artists are given the opportunity to directly engage with environmental change and members of the public.
