Freedom School Partners

Servant Leader Intern

May - July 2021 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

Working with kids! I sometimes miss my old students.

What I wish was different

Advice

That if you don't like kids or dealing with difficult personalities, this is not the job for you. It very much simulates being a teacher in a school setting.

Servant Leader Intern

What I liked

I loved the positive environment and the constant encouragement from coworkers and the site coordinator. The kids are wonderful and you build a relationship with almost everyone. I also loved how we educate the kids about real-life social justice issues and how you see them grow.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more guidance on classroom management and how to handle behavior.

Advice

If you want to be a teacher or in the education system in any way, this is the perfect internship to do. It gives a real look into what your day-to-day will be like. I personally am not an Education major and still found everything I learned to be extremely useful.

Servant Leader Intern

May - June 2019 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed getting classroom experience and bonding with not only my students, but all of the other campers as well. It made me feel like teaching really is the job for me

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to get a little closer to my coworkers. But considering that they all had classes of their own to attend to during the day, we did the best we could.

Advice

I would say that this type of opportunity will show you whether or not you really want to teach. It’s not easy but it is beyond fulfilling.

Teacher

May - July 2018 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

Freedom School introduced me into a flexible and life changing teaching experience. FS gave me the tools to introduce children into a love of reading, self, and community.

What I wish was different

I wish FS had an after school program so I could continue working with them during the school year!

Advice

Be the teacher you always wanted to have! This experience will not only change your life but also the lives of the students in your classroom.

Servant Leader Intern

What I liked

I learned so much during training about the civil rights movement and working with minority students— all information that I would not have learned otherwise! Also it was really great working with the kids despite how difficult it was.

What I wish was different

I wish I had had more training on classroom management.

Advice

It’s really difficult to manage a class of kids with no experience so be ready!

May - August 2016 • Davidson, NC

What I liked

I loved the independence we were given to develop curriculum for the kids, the extra-curricular classes in the afternoon were also great and allowed us to be creative.

What I wish was different

I wish that politics had not been involved.

Advice

I would make sure you can go to bed at a good time, it is tiring spending all day with kids and getting up to do it again. There is no sleeping or napping from 7:30-4:30.
