Free Spirit Media

Reporter

July - September 2020 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

This was a virtual internship. While I didn't get to experience the feeling of being in the newsroom, I was still able to connect with the other team members via Zoom. I enjoyed the projects that were assigned. I was able to grow as a journalist.

What I wish was different

I wish it wasn't virtual. I would have liked to be able to interview my sources in person and work alongside my other colleagues.

Advice

One piece of advice I have would be to always have a backup story. I was all set to publish one of my articles, and a last-minute decision from the Chicago Board of Education changed the entire perspective of my article.

Social Media Intern

June - August 2019 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I like that Free Spirit media places you on sights based on what you're interested in. I worked during the summer and they still send me emails about media opportunities happening throughout the year. Some are paid work that would be harder to find solo and others are free classes that help to improve skills in media like Camerawork, Editing on different software, directing, and social media among the few classes they offer throughout the year.

What I wish was different

Nothing Free Spirit Media was very great I had no problems working there and felt very welcomed and encouraged to try new things and network.

Advice

I would say make the most of where you are placed with Free Spirit Media. Come out your shell because some of the places do ask people to come back and work for them full time. Make friends with whoever is at your sigh and especially your Supervisor and show them that you're a hard worker.
