Overnight stocker

May - July 2020 • Kennewick, WA

What I liked

I have some great coworkers, and learned quite a bit about what must get restocked at night so that a store can run efficiently the next day.

What I wish was different

The store that I worked at was a little short staffed, so my supervisor was often frustrated that we hadn't gotten enough done by the end of the shift.

Advice

I worked night shift because my wife was also working nights. It is a bit exhausting to switch your schedule around, and I learned that I would much prefer a normal day job.

E-Commerce Clerk

June - August 2020 • Burlington, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed just having a job during a pandemic. I got to meet some new people and network with a different group of people I would have never thought of! Overall, the experience was fun, and glad I got to make some money last summer to pay for school.

What I wish was different

I wish that I got more hours than I did because I started out with 40 hours a week. However, in the last month of work, it went down to below 30 and it was difficult to watch my paycheck decrease every week.

Advice

I would share that you should never take any opportunity for granted and leave your door open because you will never know what might happen in this world and how quickly things can change!

Cashier

July - August 2019 • Boise, ID

What I liked

I loved interacting with the customers and time, for the most part, flew by me. I had reasonable breaks when working and I was paid fairly well being part time.

What I wish was different

They really need to employ more cashiers or get baggers to help. The work was really stressful on my back and caused my quite a bit of discomfort. They were short on staff and would lump you in with a lot of hours. Part time was considered to be up to 40 hours a week here and I would often work 36 hours several days in a row per week.

Advice

If you're hard up for cash and don't mind heavy manual labor then this would work out. Past 6-months they offer fairly good benefits for health care so if you can make it, that't an added bonus.

Check Out Cashier

July - October 2019 • Burien, WA

What I liked

I liked the pay I received and the routine of the job.

What I wish was different

Management, benefits for part time employees, and scheduling.

Advice

This is a good company to work for temporarily. If you have past cashier experience, you may be able to get higher pay offered. I would advise applying here intending to stay there temporarily. I personally wouldn’t be able to stay there longer than a year.

Home Clerk

June 2019 • University Place, WA

What I liked

Management is pretty flexible with work schedules for students and a nice environment to be in.

What I wish was different

The on job training was a little less intensive than it should've been and I had to work alone (without those in my department) because my department was pretty small.

Advice

If you are ever lost, just ask questions and don't feel the need to know everything all at once.

Fred Meyer Cashier

February - August 2018 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I loved interacting with the customers and making sure they left the store happy and satisfied with their purchase. It had really helped me experience interacting with folks I have never personally known before. But I felt the position was rewarding because it would improve my character and confidence in my career goals such as a news anchorman or english teacher.

What I wish was different

I wish I had some help bagging the groceries that customers brought in and displayed on the conveyer belt. I worked at the most busiest Fred Meyers and every weekend it would be total chaos. Aisles were crowded and lines were way too long and made customers unhappy. If we were able to have had baggers at the time I still worked there, it would've faster and helpful and less stressful.

Advice

Don't take anything a customer says personally. You are just doing your job. If you feel as if you are doing something that is not right call the assistant managers for help, that is what they are there for. As a cashier in a big company like Fred Meyers, there are many shoplifters or people taking advantage of the workers. You could possibly even lose your job because of it and it may not have been your fault. Stay calm, cool, call the assistant manager, and move on to the next customer.

Grocery Clerk

August 2017 • Spokane, WA

What I liked

I like that the company works with my school schedule and most of my co-workers are awesome to work with.

What I wish was different

I wish the company culture was improved. Sick calls don’t get covered which puts a lot of stress on the workers. Also, hours get cut and work load increases. It can put the employees on edge.

Advice

It’s a good job if you are in high school or college. They work with your schedule which is nice. As far as doing it for a living goes, I don’t suggest it. It puts a lot of stress on ones self which over time will wear you down.
