Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children

Volunteer

May 2018 • San José, San José Province

What I liked

I loved being able to get hands on volunteer experience, where I was able to check in patients height/weight/etc., watch the doctor diagnose the patient and treat (also help treat-give shots, etc) and how she came to that conclusion, and prescribe medicine.

What I wish was different

I loved absolutely everything about this experience, but wish I could have stayed longer.

Advice

If you are planning to do this trip, please take every opportunity thrown at you, you won't regret it.

Volunteer

May 2018 • Alajuelita, San José Province

What I liked

I loved the whole experience. Going off campus to another country was an incredible experience. Volunteering my time to something that was important to me was also a huge positive.

What I wish was different

I wish we could have stayed a little longer.

Advice

I would encourage everyone to do an off campus program at least once during your time here at Earlham. Weather you spend a whole semester abroad, or do a shorter May term, it’s a once in a lifetime experience.

Summer International Health Fellow

June 2018 • La Merced, Huancavelica Region

What I liked

I got the chance to participate in the healthcare system of Peru and analyze barriers to care faced by vulnerable populations, as well as design and implement educational lessons for children in nearby schools in Spanish.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more directly involved in healthcare and providing access to services and solutions to barriers rather than creating and implementing the lesson plans, as I think that would have had a more profound impact during my time there.

Advice

I would recommend staying for two months to realize the full scope of work there is to do.
