What I liked

I loved the experience of meeting new people and sharing Jesus with kids each week. It was a very rewarding job.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more training on different camera equipment before I started the first week of camp.

Advice

I would share how important it is to do a job in your field before you finish your degree. It makes you much more certain that your major is the right fit for you and what you really love to do.

Color team lead

What I liked

I had endless chances to share the Gospel with campers and connect with them through various activities and grow closer to God together.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been paid more and had some more time to rest. When I accepted this job it was not with the intention to make a lot of money. This camp had an incredible impact on me as a camper throughout my life and I wanted the chance to serve God through this camp.

Advice

Be prepared to work very long days on little sleep and constantly be working.

Advice

DO IT. work at a summer camp at least once in your life, it's a blast and it is life changing.

What I liked

I really grew in my faith working at Forest Home this summer. I learned how to work better on a team and got to work with many different people groups and cultures.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more open in the beginning of the summer to my staff becoming another family. I didn’t anticipate the amazing relationships that would be made. I wish I allowed myself to be pursued a little more at the beginning.

Advice

Go into this job not looking for glory for yourself, it rather seek God and His face through the pursuit of others.

Camp Counselor

May - August 2018 • Forest Falls, CA

What I liked

I loved the rich community of my staff, not to mention the 11-12 year old kids I had the opportunity to minister to over the summer. While 11-12 year olds are challenging to work with, the experience was incredibly fruitful because of the time, energy, and love I put into seeing those kids grow and mature as young boys and girls.

What I wish was different

Something I wish had been different or improved was having extensive training at the beginning of the summer regarding childcare development and curriculum construction. There was a lot of hands on training, but when it actually came to the day by day, moment by moment experiences we had with kids, there was very little training about how to engage with the age groups we were assigned. A lot of the experience was trial and error, which I was able to figure out. Nevertheless, I would have greatly appreciated more training.

Advice

Clear, honest, and direct communication is the key to success in any camp or workplace situation. Having the humility to approach people directly in times of conflict and success greatly enriched my experiences with people on my staff and with the kids I interacted, whether it was conflict resolution or planning camp events. My advice is to be bold and brave to engage in hard conversations. You will only reap strong and healthy relationships if you are willing to put the time, energy, and love into those people you care about. It's hard work, but it is completely worth it.

Photography Production Coordinator

May - August 2018 • Forest Falls, CA

What I liked

I really liked the community of young adults who came together from both local and distant places with the same desires to serve and hearts to learn.

What I wish was different

I wish the accommodations were more beneficial for the temporary staff, and that there were more activities and engagement for the staff on our times off.

Advice

It takes many more hours to take care of staff than to just do your own job, and the focus needs to be outward rather than inward.

In-Camp Assistant

May - August 2018 • Forest Falls, CA

What I liked

I loved the atmosphere of being in God's creation 24/7. It was constantly amazing to see God's beauty in the mountains of California. I also loved the small, tight-knit community of summer staff that you worked with directly, as a team, to make sure everything gets done for the program to run smoothly. The high school program manager was amazing and always open to hearing how we can improve the experience for campers and fellow staff members so that each week is able to point everyone back to God and what He has to teach them during that week. Forest Home is truly a camp like I've never encountered before. God is doing big things there.

What I wish was different

Advice

Go into it with your heart open to serve. Forest Home emphasizes service and having the properly bent heart to serve God and other people in whatever ways we can. I went in with no expectations, just a heart to learn and to serve, and I can honestly say it was the best summer of my life. And don't go at it alone. You need the community around you and a continued working relationship with God in order to make it through. It cannot be on your own strength.
