Ford Motor Company

High Voltage Battery Applications Intern

May - August 2018 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

I liked that the internship was hands-on. I also liked that the company was welcoming and friendly. It made it very easy to ask questions and talk to coworkers when needed. I also thought the intern program was very helpful with getting to know the area, meeting other interns, and getting to know all different parts of the company.

What I wish was different

I think the only thing I wish would’ve been different is getting started with projects earlier on in my internship. I did a lot of project work but the first couple of weeks were slow because of poor communication between the group of people I was supposed to be working with and my team.

Advice

Talk to multiple different people throughout the company. It’s so helpful to see what’s going on, not only in your department, but in other departments so you can understand the big picture.

Intern

May - August 2017 • Allen Park, MI

What I liked

Treated as a valued member of a team and contributed real work that is now live. Also, the company had plenty of fun events for interns.

What I wish was different

The living situation was a bit tight.

Advice

Give 110% every day and you will be hired. If there is extra work, offer to do it. If there is more to learn, learn it.

What I liked

Good Pay

What I wish was different

Advice

Ford encourages you and supports the interns in reaching out to other departments in order to gain an understanding of all areas of the business. This also helps the interns understand the business as a whole.

IT Developer Specialist

May - August 2017 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

The internship overall was a great learning experience and I had a project that made an impact to day to day business. I have been offered a position back and they are still using my project every day to manage all their documents and project information.

What I wish was different

The initial training process was not very clear and it took some time to understand exactly what it was that was expected of me. Once I figured everything out it was all good from there.

Advice

Take advantage of all the intern events that they offer. They make it easier to get to know people and make connections at Ford. They also help a lot with the internship itself.

Site Process Management Intern

June - August 2017 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed my ability to create any projects I thought fit into my position. The work I was given was good, but I never felt like I was doing enough. My supervisor allowed me to decide any extra projects I would like to take on and I did just that.

What I wish was different

I would have liked some way to have had a project I could start at the beginning of my intership and complete at the end.

Advice

Talk to your supervisor and they can make anything happen.

IT Project Manager Intern

May - July 2017 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

Onboarding process, pay, benefits, fun after work activities planned for interns

What I wish was different

My supervisor kept not approving my timecards, so my pay was very delayed. HR was not much help. Wish I could have requested a new supervisor.

Advice

Participate in the intern events, go to the skip levels, be innovative

Intern

May - August 2017 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

I liked how I worked on real projects that my team members were working on. It was awesome. They also housed us in Dearborn in a really nice apartment complex. Amazing summer.

What I wish was different

I wish we could work from home once a week as interns but once you graduate and work full time you most likely can.

Advice

Get on the internships early. Go to all of the career fairs and sell yourself! Most of these companies are trying to hire the person, not the title. If you are outgoing and seem confident, they will like you.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - September 2017 • Calumet City, IL

What I liked

I liked that I was able to work right alongside VPs who were in charge of the Ford North America Manufacturing. It helped me gain a lot of interpersonal and business skills along with the engineering skills that I was learning. I learned a ton about the manufacturing process and I have had a much easier time in my manufacturing class this semester because I already know a lot of the information from working this summer.

What I wish was different

I wish I did some more design within the internship as well. I learned a ton about manufacturing, but not much about design.

Advice

Be ready for a fast-paced environment for pretty much anything to get thrown at you. It really keeps you on your toes.

Engineering Intern

May - July 2018 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

I worked in the crash safety group at Ford. It was a very dynamic work environment and there was always something going on even if I had downtime.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been a better mentoring program. I sought out mentors myself when I wasn't assigned one and it worked out great!

Advice

Explore as much of this company as possible. It is so big and there is so much to do. Even if you don't enjoy the group you are in, there is a group for you out there.

Controls Engineer

May - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I appreciated the experience they gave me to not only understand the manufacturing process but also taught me the importance of talking to people and connecting with them especially if they aren't salary people. The union people are just as smart as the salary people in their own way. Ford is not only a car business but a peoples business.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a little more guidance however, it taught me to be more independent and look for things to improve rather than wait for management to give me a certain project to do.

Advice

Meet the people of the company from the union line workers to the plant manager. Its a people's business first then a car business

What I wish was different

Didn't feel that valued as an intern as I have had the summer previous. Lots of work, and interesting view on engineering, especially if you worked at suppliers before.

Data Analyst Intern

May - July 2018 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

Ford showed a real commitment towards investing in interns. There was the day to day job but there were also many enrichment activities all aimed at familiarizing interns to Ford and its work culture.

What I wish was different

As with many other internships (I imagine), there were periods of downtime after completing a project. My supervisor was really good about keeping me busy but I heard that this wasn't the case for some small minority of other interns.

Advice

Internships are the way to a full time job nowadays. Make sure you really research the companies you think you might like to work at in the future.
